July News from Dr. Tushaus

Dr. Tushaus has some tips about summer footwear:
“For many of us, flip-flops become the go-to footwear during the summer, but these flimsy slip-ons do not always provide ideal foot support.
Even with a comfortable flip-flop, you should limit your use to no more than a few hours of wear. Going to the pool or the beach is fine. People get into trouble when they use them all day, walking around and standing for a long period of time. The worst scenario is perhaps the Six Flags fracture. This is when a person who’s already walking more than they usually do also wears footgear with no support. Vacations can be ruined because people develop stress fractures, knee problems, and hip and back problems.
When buying flip-flops, gently bend them from end to end, ensuring it bends at the ball of the foot. Shoes of any kind should never fold in half. Don’t re-wear flip-flops year after year. Inspect older pairs for wear. If they show signs of severe wear, discard them. Avoid wearing flip-flops while walking long distances. Even the sturdiest flip-flops offer little in terms of shock absorption and arch support.”
If your wearing flip-flops and you are experiencing ankle, knee, hip and/or back pain please consider a different type of sandal and of course, let us help! Dr. Tushaus is always “watching your back”.
Call the office for your next appointment and have a safe, fun summer break.

Chiropractic Care & Sports Rehab, Inc. wants to help you make the best of the first month of summer with some health tips and a special discount offer on Massage Therapy.
**National Safety Month promotes safety at home and work**
Overexertion is a major cause of the inflammation of joints and ligaments that results from excessive physical effort. Overexertion injuries, mainly sprains and strains, to the back or spine comprise about 40 percent of both on and off-the-job injuries. Overexertion is the third leading cause for non-fatal injuries in the United States (National Safety Council Injury Facts, 2010 Edition). Pacing yourself and moving properly can help make you more productive in the end. Stretch and/or warm up before heavy lifting or strenuous activity. Know your limits. Don’t be afraid to slow your pace or take a break if your body needs one. Lighten your load with a friend! Take the strain off with half the load. Avoid bending, reaching and twisting when lifting. Lift with your legs bent and objects close to your body.
**Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Month
Promotes healthy eating for the whole family**
The USDA recommends 2-3 cups of fresh fruits and veggies every day, depending on your activity level. Eating fruits and veggies adds fiber to your diet, for digestion, and ensures you get enough vitamins and minerals for healthy living. Fruits and vegetables are linked to the prevention of heart disease, Type 2 Diabetes and stroke. The more variety in color the better. Greens are great for your eyes. Orange fruits are good for the immune system and red for heart health. Blue and purple have antioxidants, which protect against cell damage and improve memory. White fruits and veggie lower cholesterol and blood pressure. A lot of veggies can be eaten raw and are great for snacks and finger foods but steaming is the healthiest way to consume cooked veggies. The nutrients we need are retained when steaming. Fresh produce is now available in grocery stores, farmers markets and roadside stands so add a peach to your breakfast, a mixed salad at lunch and maybe steamed bell peppers, onions and broccoli for dinner.
